Ailments : A-Z |
Strictly speaking, there are only two essential fatty acids: linoleic acid (omega-6)
and linolenic acid (omega-3). If these two are supplied in adequate amounts, the
body can make all of the other fatty acids it requires — provided it also
has all of the vitamins and minerals it needs to make the conversions. ("Essential"
refers to any nutrient that the body is unable to synthesize and must be supplied
by diet.)
Oleic acid is an omega-9 fatty acid that is incredibly important. Oleic acid is the predominant fatty acid in mother's milk and the predominant fatty acid in sebum, the secretion that protects skin cells. Oleic acid contributes stability to cellular membranes, protecting them from invasion by viruses and free radicals. And oleic acid facilitates the body's production of a number of hormones. Because oleic acid is classed as "nonessential" it is assumed that the body can make all that it needs. Ideally this would be so, but rarely are conditions ideas. The body's priority for oleic acid is so high that it will divert essential fatty acids from other uses in order to make it. Thus, taking external oleic acid has a sparing effect on the essential fatty acids, freeing them up for other purposes. Olive oil is about 79 per cent oleic acid, making it the most cost-effective way of ensuring enough of this important omega-9 fatty acid in our diet. Olive oil is the key ingredient in the Mediterranean diet, which has been well studied for its health benefits. Every sound health program needs to include two tablespoons of olive oil daily as a dietary supplement. Make salad dressings with it, use it for low temperature frying, dip bread in it — take it in whatever way works best for you. Your body will thank you. Flaxseed Oil (Omega-3/6/9 EFAs) Vitamost® Flaxseed Oil is an ideal supplement to ensure a healthy intake of essential fatty acids, especially those that are scarce or adulterated in our normal food supply. It provides the following fatty acids in these approximate proportions: 57% Linolenic Acid (omega-3), 16% Linoleic Acid (omega-6), and 18% Oleic Acid (omega-9). Since most diets are too high in omega-6 fatty acids and not high enough in the omega-3's, flaxseed oil is an excellent way of not only increasing one's total intake of essential fatty acids but also of restoring balance to the omega-3:6 ratio. Therapeutically, flaxseed oil has been documented to be of benefit to such conditions as cancer, hypertension, immune weakness, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamost® Flaxseed Oil is of the highest possible quality. It is made from organic flax seeds that are cold-pressed in the absence of light and oxygen, and hermetically sealed into soft gelatin capsules. The only excipients used are natural glycerin and purified water. The capsules are blackened with carob to seal out light and are packaged in black, lightproof bottles. This is absolutely the safest way to consume flaxseed oil. Liquid flaxseed oil is highly unstable; when subjected to light, heat or oxygen it rapidly breaks down to produce damaging free radicals. Suggested Use: 2 capsules daily, in divided amounts with meals. Ingredients: Each softgel capsule contains 1,000 mg. of organic cold pressed flaxseed oil. Fish Oil & Garlic (Omega-3 EFAs) Fish Oil & Garlic is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from the body oils of halibut and cod. It has anti-inflammatory action and is preferable to acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and aspirin-like compounds for preventing blood clots. A number of studies support the use of fish body oils for hypertension, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, eye disorders, migraines, and for normalizing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish body oils act as an "anti-freeze" to cold water fish. They lend similar flow-improving properties to our bloodstream. Concentrated garlic in this product adds additional blood clot preventing and blood pressure ameliorating activity of its own. Clinical studies have shown garlic to impact many key factors involved in atherosclerosis, including an ability to lower blood pressure, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and platelet aggregation while simultaneously increasing HDL-cholesterol and fibrinolysis (breaking down of blood clots). The garlic in this product is deodorized in a way that preserves its effectiveness. No garlic aftertaste! Suggested Use: 2 to 3 capsules daily, in divided amounts with meals. Ingredients: Each softgel capsule contains 500 mg. of fish body oil concentrate plus the deodorized garlic from 250 mg. of fresh, whole garlic cloves with safflower oil and citrus extract. |
